Match and join veneer

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to match, stitch, tape or glue slices of veneer in readiness for bonding to panel products.

The unit applies to production operators and technicians who match and join veneer in a forest and wood products factory setting.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for joining veneer

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of veneer for matching and joining from veneer production process.

1.4 Select matching and joining process in line with work order.

2. Match and join veneer

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.

2.3 Set machine functions and feed rate for optimal product recovery.

2.4 Select joining method in line with veneer to be matched.

2.5 Inspect sheets visually and match veneer to specification.

2.6 Clip sheets to provide clean edges and join in line with work order.

2.7 Assess veneer visually throughout joining process for strength and production defects.

3. Redistribute material

3.1 Assess joins and grade veneer in line with organisational procedures and industry standards.

3.2 Direct material to storage or processing operations in line with organisational procedures.

3.3 Dispose of sub-standard material and excess glue in line with environmental protection practices.

3.4 Clean work area and store unused glue in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

join veneer using the following techniques in line with individual work orders that prescribe different lengths, widths, thicknesses and quantities for each job:

stitching

gluing

taping

match veneer according to:

grain

grade

length

colour

for each of the above jobs, visually inspect joined veneer and grade according to industry and organisational standards.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber

disposing of hazardous substances

typical flow of material supply in and out of the veneer production area

features of veneer used to match:

grain

grade

length

colour

typical work flow processes and techniques used to join veneer:

stitching

gluing

taping

methods used to visually assess condition of veneer for strength and typical production defects:

overlaps

gaps

veneer faults

joining spacing’s

purpose, features and operation of equipment used to match and join veneer:

clipping machines

guillotines

veneer sewing equipment

veneer gluing equipment

veneer taping equipment

methods used to safely store glue

key features of and applicable terminology for industry standard grades for joined veneer

organisational procedures specific to matching and joining veneer:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting linesrecording and reporting production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

clipping machines

guillotines

veneer sewing equipment

veneer gluing equipment

veneer taping equipment

personal protective equipment suitable for matching and joining veneer

consumable tape and glue

commercial single thickness veneer of varying thicknesses

manufacturers’:

instructions for equipment use

safety data sheets for glue

work order with specific instructions for matching and joining veneer

template documents for recording production outcomes and equipment faults

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for matching and joining veneer.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

identify quantities of required material within work orders and count amounts of veneer

interpret order sizes and set up equipment to achieve specified dimensions

calculate the feed rate to optimise quality and quantity of production output.

Oral communication skills to:

ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

interpret:

workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures

work orders

safety data sheets for glue

manufacturers’ instructions.

Writing skills to:

complete accurate basic records for production outcomes and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and production using work order to guide activities.
